Outliers

Find the videos beating their own channel.

Big view counts mostly mean big channels. The ideas worth studying are the videos that did many times better than their own channel usually does, so every result here is scored against that channel’s recent uploads. A small channel’s 12x sits above a giant’s ordinary upload.

The outlier finder is switching on soon. It works from YouTube’s own numbers, and is waiting on YouTube’s go-ahead for this kind of analysis. Until then, Trends has the sounds TikTok, Reels and Shorts are using this week.

How the score is worked out

  1. What the channel usually gets. The median views of its last thirty uploads of the same kind, Shorts against Shorts and videos against videos, leaving out anything under a week old and the video being scored. A median, so one old viral hit cannot hide the next one.
  2. The score. The video’s views divided by that. 2x is good, 5x is strong, 10x and up is exceptional.
  3. Still climbing. A video under a week old has not had its views yet, so its score understates it. Sort by views per hour to find the ones moving fastest.
  4. What they have in common. The words and title shapes the top results share and the rest do not, counted across different channels, so one channel’s series name is not mistaken for a pattern.
